This week for the 987FM top 100 countdown preview, we take a look at songs that looked as if they were going to reach the summit, but somehow it flatters and drops out of the charts.

This year, a grand total of 28 songs reached the top 5 of the 987FM charts, but didn’t get the number one spot. Surprisingly, some of these songs can actually last longer on the charts as compared to some of the number one songs. One great example, would be Aly & AJ’s Potential Breakup Song, which is the longest lasting non-number one song ever on the history of the charts, by staying for a whopping 14 weeks, despite peaking only at 4. Only 3 other songs this year had stayed for 14 weeks, and there were all number one hits- Low, With You and No One.

There were some very popular and hotly requested songs, but yet there were unable to reach the top of Singapore. They would include the infectious hit single by Metro Station- Shake it, Coldplay Grammy nominated record of the year- Viva La Vida and Boys Like Girls Hero/Heroine All of which, could only peak at number 2, and stayed on the charts for 12 weeks. Teardrops on My Guitar by Taylor Swift also did not reach the coveted number one spot, reaching number 2.

Not all Disney songs could top the charts either; one of them was Miley Cyrus’ debut hit- See You Again, peaking at number 2 and spending 11 weeks. One Republic could not follow up the success of its previous single Apologize as Stop and Stare could only reach number 3. Same for Leona Lewis’ Better in Time, as she too failed to live up to the expectations of her previous number one hit Bleeding Love.

There were also songs that everyone knew and heard of, but too failed to top the charts. This includes Sara Bareilles, who took the airways by storm with Love Song and MySpace music prodigy- Colbie Cailat’s Bubbly, both could not even reach top 3, peaking only at 4 and staying for a mere 9 weeks.

Rihanna would have wished for another number one hit from her Good Girl Gone Bad album, but Hate That I Love You could only reach number 4. And most recently, everyone would have thought that Flobots could paddle their way up to the peak, even without Handlebars, but somehow they lost pace and was out of the race for number one, peaking at number 3.

Paramore got to be the biggest loser of 2008, on the Singapore charts, as the highly anticipated Misery Business and Cruscrushcrush could only peak at 2 and 4 respectively. If that wasn’t bad enough, Misery Business could only spend 8 weeks on the charts, which was the same for Pussycat Doll’s When I Grow Up, which also spent the same amount of time on the charts and peaked at the same number.

Next week, we take a look at how Singapore songs fared on the charts in the year 2008, songs that rocked other countries’ chart, but failed to shine in Singapore and also songs that bubbled but failed to debut on the charts. Till then..
